Episode # 82 – How to Manage Your Anger and Stay Calm in Life
Failure to manage your anger can leave you in very regretful situations. If you’ve gotten to that point, there’s a great chance you don’t recognize yourself. And if you can’t, you tell me who else will.
Before we get too ahead of ourselves, It’s important to acknowledge its nature. The truth is, it’s actually normal to get angry. After all, it is a human emotion, isn’t it? I’d be lying if I said I never got angry. Better yet, I’d be lying if I said I still don’t get angry from time to time.
One way to manage your anger is by being mindful of how you deal with it. What is causing such a shift and what are some ways you can go about easing it away? Believe it or not, there are some healthy ways in which you can express your anger.
I always like to ask myself, “Am I trying to win, or am I trying to make a statement?” It just so happens that making a statement never contributed to a mutual win. But as it pertains to winning, where two people benefit, it changes the entire approach.
There’s a time to dwell and a time to move on. The question is, which one benefits the world most at any current moment? In managing your anger, a thought of a win allows you to look beyond just yourself. This is because you know without you two feeling good, there is no win.
Just because you have sought to manage your anger doesn’t mean that you’re eliminating it altogether. It’s something that we learn over time. No matter where you are on your journey, I’m sure you can use some room to improve.
Why Manage Your Anger?
So why would you control your temper? After all, isn’t it the only way to keep calm in life? Before answering any questions, it’s important to acknowledge what this anger is all about. First of all, it’s an emotion sourced from a mild irritation to intense rage.
Although anger can be looked at as negative, it can also be positive. The anger inside of you may cause you to stand up for someone in need of your defense. It can also, motivate you to influence positive change. I guess it’s not what you have, but more what you do with it.
Anger only becomes a problem when it becomes a space you dwell in. Experiencing it is one thing, but staying there is another. We all get angry, but how do you think life will be if we stay there? Not too good, I would say.
Calming Techniques for Your Anger
I learned over the years that when things don’t seem to go the way you pan it, change the way you see it. When you change the way you see it you are better able to manage your anger. The only thing that tends to bother us isn’t what we are actually going through. But rather, it is the way we define the event that makes all the difference.
What you keep on your mind, your thoughts, affect the way you react in any given event. So if it is a shift in emotion you seek, you have nothing but to change the way you think. Because what you think, what you believe influences the emotion you project.
Therefore whenever you experience a shift within you, and you will ask yourself what thoughts you’re keeping. You’ll be surprised as to how quickly a shift can take place when the content of your mind changes. Deal with your anger by dealing with what ignites it; your thoughts. Manage your anger, don’t allow it to manage you.
Sometimes the anger I feel is more my friend than my enemy. How do I know? The moment I am able to realize how I can use it to my advantage. For instance, sometimes the anger I experience drives me to the brink of accomplishing something that once seemed tough. Therefore, the emotion you possess either drives you or plows you. It can be used in any way you see fit.
