When you increase self-control, you’ll know exactly what freedom feels like. I mean, I get it, things happen that are beyond any of our control. That’s life. As a matter of fact, many things will happen and many of those things you may not like. Control yourself, for the freedom isn’t in the cause, it’s all in the effect.

How many times have you planned a trip only to catch a flat tire? What about the car that cuts you off or just won’t let you in? How many times have you asked someone how their day was only to hear them reply, “It was great until…”? If so, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there at some point or time.

Fortunately for you, I’ve gathered some tips to help you understand how to improve your self-control. After all, it’s time that you control yourself so these so-called problems of yours take the back seat.

Take a Step Back

Sometimes what’s happening can be to your benefit. It may not be what you want, but it may be what you need. Part of learning self-control is seeing the big picture. In other words, assess before you progress in the wrong direction.

Out of all the tools I’ve used, this has been the most valuable. It’s like looking both ways before crossing the street. To increase self-control, it’s important to change your outlook. What’s in front of you is not always as bad as you think it is. Too many times do we think things are happening to us than for us.

This reminds me of an event back in college. After hearing that my birthday was approaching, one of my classmates invited me out. She figured since she and her friends were already celebrating why not invite the birthday boy.

Well, right before that time came, a friend of mines asked me to help him do some moving. We were about an hour out and I could already see myself missing out. I was frustrated that I wasn’t able to make good on my promise and would end up not making it.

After showing up for class, I had learned that the car that I would’ve been in was in an accident. And out of the people that didn’t make it was the classmate that had invited me. Control yourself. I was trapped between being devastated and grateful. I would have to come to class for the remainder of the semester with the seat next to me empty.

Get Meditated to Increase Self-Control

improve self-control

How many of you lose it when about to take place? Whether it be a company presentation or a huge school exam, it happens. The closer we get to the event, the more we stress sinks in. I get self-control through meditation. It reinforces me and keeps me in a place that serves me.

Meditation is a great way of keeping your mind clear of things that have a tendency to take control of you. It’s self-care if you ask me. There’s nothing wrong with a little me time, but in your case, your time.

Improving self-control requires you to be in the right state of mind. It’s important to be calm and collected if you are to better handle the unforeseen. Meditation not only allows you to center yourself, it also allows you to recreate yourself. In other words, meditation allows you to feed your mind with what it needs most.

If it’s control you seek, it’s control you’ll find. Meditation has allowed me the space to rid my mind of the thoughts of others by feeding myself with thoughts of my own. You might not be able to control all situations, but you can control yourself to determine the outcome. It’s in your hands. You hold the power to turn things around. And mediation puts the power right back in your hands. And with that power, comes freedom.

Learn to Let Go and Move On

Let go. It’s just that simple. We often come down on ourselves a little too much at times. We are all imperfect beings. Therefore, allow yourself the chance to be just that. We are incapable of doing things perfectly so learn to let go and move on from things.

practicing self control

To expect perfection is to restrict growth. Letting go doesn’t mean you don’t care. It just means that you control yourself from being affected by yourself. Letting go gives you an opportunity to win another day. Believe it or not, once you’ve accepted and embraced a lost, you’ve grown.

You’ve allowed yourself the opportunity to evaluate and learn for future reference. Throughout my journey of growth, it took time. It definitely didn’t come overnight. Acknowledging the event gave me the opportunity to grow from it. That’s because in my acknowledging it alone I had grown. I knew that the more that I was aware of my actions I would give myself a chance for I knew my destination.

So give it time. Nothing happens overnight, except death. So with life we have all the time in the world to grow. Each day we live lies an opportunity. By allowing you know increase self-control, you sustain it. The more calm and centered you are, the more space you allow for things to fall into place. You are not only the beginning, you are also the end.
